Prepositions

Prepositions are words that connect other words or phrases. The show the relationship between the words or the action or direction that is going on in the sentence.

Here is a list of some of the most common Spanish prepositions.

a	to, at	Voy a la tienda. I'm going to the store.
con	with	Voy con mi hermano. I'm going with my brother.
contra	against	Hay que ponerlo contra la pared. We should put it against the wall.
de	of, from	Soy de españa. I'm from Spain.
desde	from, since	Han pasado muchos años desde que yo nací. Many years have passed since I was born.
durante	during	Fue durante la clase. It happened during class.
encima de	on, on top of	Está encima de la ropa. It's on top of the clothes.
en	in, on	Está en la mesa. It's on the table.
en lugar de	instead of	Dame el rojo en lugar del verde. Give me the red one instead of the green one.
entre	between	Estoy en entre la espada y la pared. I'm between the devil and the great blue sea.
entre	divided by	Diez entre dos son cinco. Ten divided by two is five.
hacia	toward(s)	Voy hacia la casa. I'm headed home.
hasta	until	Estaré aquí hasta que se ponga el sol. I'll be here until the sun goes down.
para	for, in order to	Lo hice para hacer dinero. I did it in order to make money.
por	for, by	Fue escrito por él. It was written by him.
por	times, multiplied by	Cinco por cinco son veinticinco. Five times five is twenty-five.
sin	without	Ando sin dinero. I don't have any money.
sobre	over, above, on	Está sobre la mesa. It's on the table.
tras	after	Vamos tras la fama. We're after fame.
